Woman with kyphosis spinal curvature

Kyphosis, an unnatural forward curving of the spine, results from collapsed vertebrae. This causes the back to appear hunched. Reasons for the condition may be bad posture, physical damage, or diseases such as Osteoporosis, Scheuermann’s Disease, Pott’s Disease or Spinal Tumors.

Treatment is often not needed, although increased calcium intake and weight-bearing exercises to strengthen bones can be helpful. When severe, a person with Kyphosis may have aches in the neck and lower back. An orthopedic brace may prevent further curvature in growing children. In rare cases, Spinal Fusion Surgery may straighten and stabilize the spine.
